Panic in Lagos as residents, traders’ battle fire after explosion near Ojota Park (Video)
Tension gripped parts of Lagos on Tuesday after a fire outbreak triggered by an explosion near the busy Ojota Park sent residents, traders and commuters scrambling for safety.
Eyewitnesses said the incident caused widespread panic in the area as thick smoke billowed into the sky while frightened residents and shop owners rushed to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings and businesses.
Videos and photographs circulating online showed groups of residents and traders making desperate efforts to contain the fire using buckets of water and other improvised materials before the arrival of emergency response officials.
The exact cause of the explosion had not been confirmed as of the time this report was filed, although authorities were said to be investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Several traders operating around the Ojota axis reportedly abandoned their stalls and goods in fear as the fire intensified shortly after the explosion.
Motorists and commuters passing through the area also experienced temporary disruption, with traffic building up around adjoining roads as curious onlookers gathered near the scene.
Emergency responders were later seen moving into the area to contain the situation and prevent further damage.
Officials had yet to release information regarding possible casualties, injuries or the extent of property damage caused by the incident.
Residents in the area expressed concern over the recurring cases of fire outbreaks and explosions in densely populated parts of Lagos, calling for stricter safety measures and improved emergency response systems.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates after preliminary investigations into the cause of the explosion and fire outbreak are concluded.
