Bellingham says England better connected ahead of World Cup after lessons from Euro 2024
England midfielder Jude Bellingham has said the national team is entering the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a stronger sense of unity and connection than it had during its run to the UEFA Euro 2024 final.
Speaking from England’s training camp in the United States, the 22-year-old reflected on the team’s experience at Euro 2024, where the Three Lions reached the final but were defeated by Spain national football team. Despite progressing deep into the tournament, England faced criticism over the quality of its performances.
Bellingham acknowledged that the squad did not always function as effectively off the pitch as it could have during the European Championship, citing the pressure of expectations and the team’s struggles to consistently produce its best football.
“At the Euros, I don’t feel like the group connected as well as it could have for a number of reasons,” Bellingham said. “Expectation was part of it. We were not playing particularly well, so even when we were winning, you didn’t get the feeling you were as happy as you should be.”
The midfielder said those experiences have helped shape a more cohesive environment under new England manager Thomas Tuchel, who has emphasized building a strong team culture ahead of the World Cup.
According to Bellingham, every member of the squad must feel valued and prepared to contribute, regardless of their role. He noted that success in major tournaments often depends on contributions from across the entire squad rather than a handful of star players.
Tuchel has also handed Bellingham the iconic number 10 shirt for the tournament, underlining the midfielder’s importance to England’s plans. The Real Madrid player is expected to play a key role alongside Declan Rice in the team’s midfield.
England are scheduled to arrive at their World Cup base in Kansas City before opening their campaign against Croatia national football team on June 17 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The Three Lions are seeking to end a long wait for a major international trophy after falling short in recent tournaments, including the Euro 2024 final.
