Tinubu Grants Customs Boss Adeniyi Final Six-Month Extension to Oversee Single Window Project, Succession
ABUJA, President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027 to complete key reforms and oversee an orderly leadership transition at the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
A statement issued Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said Adeniyi’s first tenure extension had been due to lapse on August 1, 2026. The fresh extension is intended to give him time to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window, a trade facilitation system aimed at digitising and streamlining import-export documentation, and to ensure a smooth handover within the service.

According to the statement, Adeniyi will work alongside the NCS Board during the transition period to promote eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, while also enforcing the compulsory retirement of personnel who have either turned 60 or completed 35 years of service.
Adeniyi’s career in the Customs Service dates back to the late 1980s, following his graduation from Obafemi Awolowo University. He steadily climbed the ranks over more than three decades, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, and Assistant Comptroller General in 2020. He served as Acting Deputy Comptroller-General from January 2023 before President Tinubu appointed him as the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service in June 2023.
The latest extension marks the second time the President has retained Adeniyi beyond a standard tenure, underscoring the administration’s emphasis on continuity in the implementation of customs reforms ahead of the 2027 transition at the helm of the service.
