Three arrested in Osun over alleged possession of exhumed human skull
Operatives of the Osun State Police Command have arrested three suspects allegedly found in possession of a human skull believed to have been exhumed from a grave.
The suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation following reports of suspicious activities around a burial site. Police said a search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of a human skull concealed in a polythene bag.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspects allegedly conspired to exhume the remains from a family grave. During interrogation, they reportedly confessed to removing the skull from the burial site, with investigators probing the motive behind the act, including possible ritual-related activities.
The recovered human skull has been secured as evidence while the suspects have been taken into custody for further investigation.
The Osun State Police Command described the incident as a serious criminal offence, noting that grave desecration and the unlawful possession of human remains violate provisions of the Criminal Code.
Police authorities disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo for a comprehensive investigation. Detectives are also working to determine whether the suspects are linked to a wider criminal network involved in grave robbery or ritual-related crimes.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the command said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The command also commended members of the public whose timely information led to the arrests, urging residents to continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies. It assured the public of its commitment to tackling criminal activities across the state and encouraged citizens to promptly report any suspicious movements or incidents to the nearest police station.
