Haaland fires Manchester City to dramatic comeback victory over Leipzig
Manchester City produced a thrilling second-half comeback to defeat RB Leipzig 3-2 in a pulsating UEFA Champions League league-phase encounter on Wednesday, with Erling Haaland delivering the decisive blow to rescue the Premier League champions after they fell behind.
The Norwegian striker struck in the 78th minute to complete City’s remarkable turnaround, capping an entertaining contest in which both sides demonstrated attacking ambition and resilience.
City appeared to have taken control of proceedings in the 37th minute when Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba inadvertently turned a dangerous attacking delivery into his own net to hand the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
However, Leipzig returned from the break with renewed determination, producing a spirited response that threatened to derail City’s campaign.
The German side drew level in the 49th minute through Ridle Baku, who produced a remarkable finish from an acute angle to beat the City goalkeeper and restore parity.
Leipzig continued to press forward and eventually took the lead in the 61st minute when Antonio Nusa finished brilliantly from inside the box after receiving a superb lofted pass from Christopher Nkunku.

The goal sent the home supporters into celebration and left City facing the prospect of a disappointing defeat in a match they had initially dominated.
But Pep Guardiola’s men refused to surrender, responding with renewed attacking intensity as they searched for a way back into the contest.
City restored parity in the 58th minute through Enzo Fernandez, who rose highest to meet a precise cross from Iliman Ndiaye and headed home to make it 2-2.
With the contest delicately poised, both teams pushed forward in search of a decisive breakthrough, but it was City who eventually found the winning goal.
In the 78th minute, Elliot Anderson provided the crucial assist, setting up Haaland, who calmly tapped the ball into an unguarded net to put the visitors ahead 3-2.
Leipzig refused to give up and launched a desperate assault in the closing stages, coming agonisingly close to an equaliser when David Raum’s free-kick crashed against the crossbar in the 81st minute.
City, meanwhile, had opportunities to put the contest beyond reach. Rayan Cherki struck the woodwork in the 84th minute, while Haaland was denied by goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt in the 90th minute.
The hosts thought they had salvaged a dramatic late equaliser in the 89th minute through Brajan Gruda, but celebrations were cut short after the goal was ruled out for offside.
Manchester City subsequently endured five minutes of stoppage-time pressure before holding on to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory.
The result underlined City’s determination and attacking firepower, as Guardiola’s side demonstrated their ability to recover from adversity and snatch victory in a fiercely contested European encounter.
