Constitution Amendment: NLC intimidates NASS on LG autonomy

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday carried a mass protest at the National Assembly in a subtle intimidation of the federal lawmakers to have majority on the autonomy of local governments and the judiciary as the federal parliament commences clause by clause voting on the amendment of the constitution.

NLC leaders argued that lack of autonomy for the judiciary and the local government as the third tier of government, are contrary to democratic principles.

However, issues of local government can only be legislated upon by the state legislatures. More so, whatever amendment is done by the National Assembly must be ratified by two thirds of the House of Assembly of the 36 states of the federation.

The debates, however, continue about the constitution amendment.
