ECOWAS sends military force to reinforce stabilize Guinea Bissau after failed coup
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at its emergency summit in Ghana on Thursday, made a resolution to deploy military Stabilization Force to Guinea Bissau, following failed coup on Tuesday.
ECOWAS Chairman, President Nana Akufo Addo of Ghana, at the opening session appealed to other leaders in the West African subregion to unite to end the resurgence of military coup in the region, noting that the coups cause set back from the gains of democracy recorded in the past two decades.
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean- Claude Kassi Brou, in a communique, affirmed the resolution to send troops to Guinea Bissau to reinforce the military in the country after the failed coup to oust President Umarou Embalo.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo departed the shores of Nigeria in the early hours of Thursday to represent President Muhammadu Buhari at the ECOWAS emergency summit in Accra, Ghana.
Leaders of the subregional body reaffirmed that Burkina Faso remained suspended from all activities of ECOWAS since the military coup in the country. They urged the military to release the timetable for transition to democracy.
ECOWAS leaders were briefed that intervention mission to Mali to enjoin the military Junta that overthrew late President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita failed. The military junta led by Assimi Goita was said to have jettisoned all agreements reached with ECOWAS on restoring democracy in the country.
