English Premiership League: The contenders, pretenders and jokers
The 2024-25 Premier League title race is shaping up to be a two-way battle between Manchester City and Arsenal.
City, who have claimed the title for the past four seasons, are once again favourites, but they face challenges this time.
A quiet transfer window and the departure of key player Julian Alvarez have left them more vulnerable, and with Pep Guardiola in the final year of his contract, uncertainty looms over his future.
Arsenal, runners-up in the last two seasons under Mikel Arteta, are seen as the strongest challengers to City’s dominance.
The Gunners have bolstered their squad with the signing of Italy international Riccardo Calafiori and are poised to mount a serious title challenge.

Beyond City and Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur are strong contenders for a top-four finish. Liverpool, under new coach Arne Slot following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, are undergoing a rebuild.
Their pre-season form, including wins over United and Arsenal, has given fans reason for optimism.
Manchester United, led by Erik ten Hag, are also seeking a resurgence after finishing eighth last season—their worst-ever Premier League finish.
Ten Hag retained his job after a surprise FA Cup final win against Manchester City, and with high-profile signings and changes in club ownership, United are aiming for a top-four spot.
Tottenham Hotspur, who narrowly missed out on the top four by finishing fifth last season, are also in contention.
Under the guidance of Australian coach Ange Postecoglou, Spurs will be looking to build on last season’s foundation and return to the Champions League.
Newly-promoted Leicester City and Southampton are back in the Premier League after a year’s absence, having earned their spots by winning the Championship and the Championship playoff, respectively.
