Fenerbahce head coach, Jose Mourinho, has expressed his disappointment with the officiating following his team’s elimination from the UEFA Europa League at the Round of 16 stage by Rangers on Thursday night.
The Turkish side faced an uphill battle after suffering a 3-1 defeat in the first leg at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul.
Despite securing a 2-0 victory in Scotland, the result was insufficient to overturn the deficit, as Fenerbahce fell short of progressing to the quarterfinals. The team needed to score three goals without conceding to advance but ultimately came up short.
Mourinho, renowned for his outspoken nature, pointed to several contentious refereeing decisions that he felt went against his side, hinting at a possible pattern of unfavorable officiating in European competitions.
“I hope everything that’s happened to me in European competitions is not a consequence of the Budapest final and I hope it’s just random,” Mourinho said, referencing his controversial suspension following the 2023 UEFA Europa League final when he was in charge of AS Roma.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager highlighted past incidents, including a decisive penalty that cost his team a place in the UEFA Champions League, as further evidence of questionable officiating.

“Since that final, since my suspension, the things that happened to us – we didn’t play Champions League because of a penalty in the 120th minute that only the fourth official saw.
“Today we came here, and the VAR is considered one of the best VARs, yet he didn’t see one of three penalties. I just hope it’s random.
“I paid for the suspension and I hope that it’s over. I pray that this is just bad luck,”Mourinho lamented.
Mourinho’s comments reflect his continued frustration with European refereeing standards, particularly in high-stakes matches.
While he stopped short of directly accusing UEFA of bias, his remarks suggest lingering resentment over previous disciplinary actions and controversial decisions.
As Fenerbahce shifts focus to domestic competitions, Mourinho will be eager to rally his squad and push for success in the Turkish Super Lig.
However, his latest remarks will likely add to ongoing debates about the consistency and fairness of officiating in European competitions.
