The Lagos State Government LASG has reiterated its commitment to sustainable urban growth, emphasizing the importance of safety, sustainability, and resilience in the face of rapid urbanization.

This was announced by Ms. Bakarat Odunuga-Bakare, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Housing, at a news conference on Thursday.

The occasion marked the official announcement of the 5th Lagos Real Estate Marketplace Conference and Exhibition, scheduled to take place from December 10 to 11, 2024, at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.

The event, organized by the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA), aims to address key issues surrounding the growing real estate sector in Lagos.

Odunuga-Bakare highlighted that the state government’s focus on sustainable development practices is crucial, as Lagos faces growing challenges in managing the increasing demand for housing while also tackling environmental concerns.

She stressed that the government is working to enhance the safety and integrity of Lagos’ built environment, which is critical for the future of the state.

“Lagos remains one of the fastest-growing cities in the world and a major economic hub in Africa.

The real estate sector plays a significant role in driving this growth, creating jobs, attracting investments, and contributing to the development of the state’s infrastructure,” Odunuga-Bakare said.

She further elaborated on the theme of this year’s conference, “Reimagining the Lagos Landscape: Ensuring Sustainable Real Estate Development Practices,” which underscores the state’s dedication to ensuring that urban expansion does not come at the expense of safety or sustainability.

“The rapid growth of our urban spaces must be balanced with safety, sustainability, and resilience,” she added. “At the 5th Lagos Real Estate Marketplace conference, we will focus on key areas such as innovation in housing solutions, sustainable building practices, regulatory reforms, and investment opportunities.”

The Special Adviser emphasized that the conference is not just a networking event but a strategic initiative aimed at building a more sustainable and resilient real estate sector in Lagos.

The event will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including thought leaders, real estate developers, investors, policymakers, and regulators, who will engage in critical discussions on the future of the sector.

Additionally, Odunuga-Bakare touched on the need for transparency, accountability, and professionalism in the real estate sector, stressing the importance of robust regulatory frameworks to protect the interests of both public and private sector stakeholders.

She noted that the state government is working to strengthen LASRERA, which is responsible for registering and regulating real estate practitioners in Lagos.

“By enforcing standards, monitoring compliance, and encouraging transparency, LASRERA ensures that only qualified professionals are involved in real estate transactions,” she explained, adding that this approach is key to restoring confidence in the sector and avoiding past mistakes.

In closing, Odunuga-Bakare expressed gratitude to the sponsors, exhibitors, and participants for their support in making the conference possible.

She reaffirmed the state’s commitment to continuing its progress as a model of growth and development in Africa.

“Together, we will continue to ensure that our state remains a model for growth and development in Africa,” she concluded.
