National Peace Committee condemns violation of Peace Accord by candidates
The National Peace Committee (NPC) led by former Head of State, General Abdusalami Abubakar, on Monday condemned the breach of the peace accord signed by candidates in the 2023 general elections, decrying the deterioration in the communication of fundamental issues among the politicians since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifted the ban on political campaigns.
Chairman of the National Peace Committee (NPC), General Abdulsalami Abubakar, in a statement by the Committee in Abuja on Monday expressed that Nigerians are genuinely concerned, troubled and disappointed by the conduct and attitude of some of the party stakeholders in the last few weeks, who are heating up the polity with intemperate language, intimidation and outright violence in the field of the campaigns.
The Committee lamented that It is evident that some political actors have not learnt any lessons from the past going by the increasing tone of desperation, if not incitement, among some of the contestants and members of their parties.
Abdulsalami Abubakar urged all the candidates to rein in their Spokespersons and those who claim to represent them and their parties in the public media.
The Peace Committee cautioned that all candidates will be held responsible for what is said on their behalf or of their party, asserting that aggressive and abusive language only diminishes the integrity of the individuals, their candidates and their parties.
The committee enjoined Nigerians to be ready to punish instigators of violence by isolating them or their candidates.
The Committee also urged the media to remain focused in managing information, noting that the social media can be a tool for good if only it is used for peaceful purposes.
