New German Govt. fights illegal migration through border control

Friedrich Merz, a potential future German chancellor, announced on Wednesday that the new German government would take a tougher stance on illegal migration.

Speaking at a news conference following coalition talks with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Merz outlined a plan to overhaul the country’s migration policy.

“We will take a new course in migration policy,” Merz declared.

“We will improve regulation and control and significantly put an end to illegal migration.”

He emphasized that this policy shift would involve stricter control at national borders, and asylum seekers who are denied status will be expelled.

Merz also shared a significant change to Germany’s citizenship policy.

Under the new plan, individuals would only be able to obtain German citizenship after five years of residence in the country, instead of the current three-year period.

The announcement marks a shift in Germany’s approach to migration, with the government set to focus on tighter controls and quicker action to address illegal migration and asylum claims.
