Saraki, Ekweremadu’s forgery trial resumes Sept. 28
- As Fed. High Court judges commence annual vacation
A Federal Territory Capital (FCT) High Court, Jabi, this Monday, adjourned the forgery trial of the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, former Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa and his deputy, Benedict Efeturi, to September 28, 2016.The judge, Justice Halilu Yusuf, adjourned the matter because of the court’s annual vacations, which began this Monday.
Saraki and Ekweremadu were arraigned by the Federal Government on a two-count charge of conspiracy and forgery. Other defendants were the immediate past Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa and his deputy, Benedict Efeturi.
They were accused of forging the 2011 Senate Standing Order on June 9, 2015 and caused it to be used during the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly in 2015.
The offence contravened Section 97 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 364 of the same law.
Meanwhile, Federal High Court judges across the country today, 11th July, 2016, formally commenced their annual vacation which will end on September 9, 2016. However, in each division of the court, vacation judges will be chosen to sit and hear urgent cases during the period.
