Nigeria will wait till year 2141 to have enough doctors
At the current rate Nigeria produces medical doctors, it will take 120 years before the nation will have enough to run its health sector.
Education Minister Malam Adamu Adamu stated this on the weekend during the maiden matriculation of the Federal University of Health Sciences (FUHSO) Otukpo in Benue.
He made the remarks at the maiden matriculation of the university held at its temporary site, Otada in Otukpo.
Represented by Sunny Echono, Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education, the minister noted the figure even depends on condition that all the doctors remain in the country.
But the establishment of FUHSO, he said, will act as a catalyst through training, research and innovation for the effective utilisation, exploitation and conservation of Nigeria’s natural, economic and human resources.
Vice Chancellor Prof Innocent Ujah said the university was “a dream come true”, adding, that FUHSO is the first-ever federal university of health sciences in Nigeria.
Governor Samuel Ortom who said he was proud that the university took off, assuring that Benue would partner with the Federal Ministry of Health for the maintenance of the standard of the university.
