Nigerian women besiege National Assembly over gender bias in constitution amendment
Nigerian women on Tuesday morning besiege the National Assembly in protest of the gender bias by the federal lawmakers in the amendment of the constitution. Various gender organizations have mobilized the women for a one million march to the National Assembly complex to continue their agitation over the rejection of all gender bills that were sought to promote the role of women in the country’s politics.
Dr. Abiola-Afolabi, President of Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), and leaders of other coalitions converged at the National Assembly protesting gender inequality in Nigeria. At the protest monitored by National Daily from Lagos, the women declared that they must stand for their rights and ensure that the labours of their leaders past will not be in vain. They cited the labours of great women of yore, like Funmi Kuti. Margerat Etta, Amina, and others, will not be in vain.
The women demanded that the federal lawmakers revisit the review of the constitution to restore the political rights of Nigerian women.
The protest spread to Lagos where women gathered in Ikeja to sustain the struggle unmarking the International Women’s Day. The wife of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State joined the rally in Ikeja.
