Plateau Assembly Speaker storms complex amid controversy
The Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Gabriel Dewan on Wednesday stormed the Assembly Complex amid the controversy that led to the security beef up within and outside the complex.
Our correspondent had reported that the sealing of the complex was in connection with the unresolved dispute involving the sacked 16 people’s Democratic Party (PDP), and the All Progressive Congress (APC), lawmakers.
Recall that the Appeal Court had sacked 16 PDP Plateau Assembly lawmakers on the grounds that the State PDP did not have a valid structure to sponsor any candidate for the 2023 general elections.
However, following the victory of the Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, at the supreme court, the PDP 16 lawmakers, approached a federal high court to seek redress of what they deemed a miscarriage of Justice by the Appeal Court.
Consequently, haven’t waited to be sworn in by the Speaker, since on the 23rd of January, 2024, the APC lawmakers on Tuesday planned to invade the Assembly Complex to resume sitting.
To prevent a breakdown of law, the Police with other sister agencies, cordoned the Assembly Complex.
It will also be recalled that the Speaker, Hon. Dewan had in December 2023 shut down the House, citing renovation of the Complex and had relocated Assembly sitting to the old Government House.
However, with the news of a planned invasion of the Complex by the APC lawmakers, the Speaker visited the Assembly on Wednesday to inspect the level of the renovation work going on.
According to him: “I am satisfied with the progress of work. With what I have seen, the renovation will soon be completed”, he said.
He however declined comments on the controversy surrounding the forceful entry of the Assembly by the APC lawmakers
