The Obidient Movement, a socio-political group supporting Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has warned the Nigerian government of imminent nationwide protests if human rights lawyer and activist, Barrister Dele Farotimi, is not immediately released from detention.
Farotimi was reportedly detained on the orders of a magistrate court following allegations of defaming renowned legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola, SAN. The movement condemned the arrest as a misuse of power aimed at suppressing dissent and silencing critical voices.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, the Obidient Movement demanded that the Nigerian Police respect Farotimi’s rights, as guaranteed under Section 40 of Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“Dele Farotimi is a vocal advocate for human rights who has consistently spoken against injustice and defended marginalized communities. His arrest is a blatant attempt to silence him and intimidate others who challenge the status quo,” Dr. Yunusa stated.
The group criticized the government for economic policies that have, according to them, exacerbated the suffering of Nigerians.
A struggling economy marked by collapsing businesses, high interest rates, and a deteriorating health sector.
The Obidient Movement further alleged that there is an orchestrated campaign against opposition figures, warning that Peter Obi himself might face detention.

“This administration is engaging in a targeted crackdown on opposition voices while turning a blind eye to the suffering of ordinary Nigerians,” Yunusa said.
The movement called on the international community to closely monitor what it described as a “disturbing development” in Nigeria. It urged global organizations and foreign governments to stand in solidarity with those advocating for justice and human rights in the country.
The Obidient Movement vowed to intensify its efforts to defend democracy, free speech, and human rights, emphasizing that they would not be deterred by intimidation.
“The arrest of Dele Farotimi is a reminder of why we must remain resolute in our struggle for a fair and just Nigeria. We will not allow these injustices to continue unchallenged,” Yunusa declared.
The group’s statement has drawn widespread attention as concerns grow over shrinking civic spaces and heightened political tensions in Nigeria.
