Mass exodus looms in APC as top party chieftains prepare to defect to SDP
In what appears to be a significant political shift, several founding members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are reportedly on the verge of leaving the party for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Barring any last-minute developments, prominent figures such as former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, and former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu are among those expected to make the move.
This development follows the defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who officially joined the SDP earlier today.
El-Rufai’s switch has fueled speculation about a broader political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While the exact reasons for the looming exodus remain unclear, political analysts suggest that the move is part of a grand strategy to establish a formidable third force capable of challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Sources within the political circle hint that discontent over internal party dynamics, governance direction, and leadership tussles may have contributed to the decision.
The APC, which was formed in 2013 through a merger of several opposition parties, has faced growing internal crises in recent months, with some members expressing dissatisfaction over its leadership and policies.
The anticipated defection of these heavyweight politicians is expected to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape significantly, potentially altering the balance of power ahead of the next election cycle.
As the political drama unfolds, observers are keenly watching whether more APC stalwarts will follow suit, further weakening the ruling party’s grip on power.
Meanwhile, the SDP is positioning itself as a viable alternative, aiming to capitalize on the growing dissatisfaction within the APC ranks.
