Amaju Pinnick misses FIFA council re-election by one vote

Former Nigeria Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick, has failed in his bid for re-election to the FIFA Council, missing out by just one vote during the Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday.

Pinnick garnered 28 votes, falling short of Djibouti’s Souleiman Waberi, who secured the final available seat with 29 votes.

Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa emerged as the leading candidate with 49 votes, while Egypt’s Hani Rida and Niger’s Djibrilla Hamidou each received 35 votes.

Mauritania’s Ahmed Yahya and Waberi also secured their places with 29 votes each.

The result marks a setback for Pinnick, who had served on FIFA’s highest decision-making body since 2021 and had hoped to extend his FIFA tenure.

In the women’s election, Kanizat Ibrahim from Comoros won the seat with 30 votes, surpassing Lydia Nsekera, who earned 13 votes, and Isha Johansen, who received 7 votes.
