In a significant milestone for Nigeria’s legal profession, the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has conferred the prestigious title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on 57 distinguished lawyers, including one academic, at its 169th plenary session held Thursday in Abuja.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who chaired the session, led the committee in approving the elevations after a rigorous selection process that underscores the committee’s dedication to upholding the highest standards of legal excellence.
Of the 57 new appointees, 56 are practicing advocates while one—Professor Chima Josephat Ubanyionwu—was honoured under the academic category for his outstanding contributions to legal scholarship.
The elevation of these legal practitioners marks a continuation of the LPPC’s tradition of recognizing excellence, integrity, and distinction in the legal profession.
The new SANs, drawn from various parts of the country, include high-profile legal figures such as the current Attorney General of Abia State and a former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch.
According to the LPPC, the new SANs will formally be sworn in at a special session of the Supreme Court scheduled for later in the year.
The conferment entitles the recipients to wear the silk gown symbolic of their elevated status and grants them the privilege of sitting in the inner bar of courtrooms.
