The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed that it has opened investigations into incidents arising from at least two quarter-final matches at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), warning that disciplinary measures may follow if breaches of regulations are established.

In a statement issued on Monday, CAF said the matters have been referred to its disciplinary bodies for thorough review, stressing its commitment to upholding discipline, fair play, and respect for match officials throughout the tournament.

One of the matches under investigation is the last-eight clash between Nigeria and Algeria, which was marred by unsporting scenes at full time.

Players from both sides were involved in confrontations on the pitch after the final whistle, while the match referee was reportedly confronted in the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms.

CAF is also examining events from another quarter-final encounter between Morocco and Cameroon.

During the match, Cameroonian players were said to have protested angrily following the referee’s decision not to award a penalty in the second half, leading to tense exchanges and prolonged stoppages.

Confirming the development, CAF said: “CAF has referred the matters to the disciplinary board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons were to be found guilty of any wrongdoing.”

The football governing body did not immediately disclose the specific individuals or teams that could face sanctions, but disciplinary actions under CAF regulations may range from fines and warnings to suspensions, depending on the findings of the investigations.

The incidents have sparked widespread debate among fans and analysts, with many calling for stricter enforcement of conduct rules to preserve the integrity of the competition.

CAF reiterated that respect for officials and adherence to the laws of the game remain non-negotiable standards at AFCON.

As the tournament progresses into its decisive stages, observers say the outcome of the investigations could send a strong signal about CAF’s resolve to maintain order and professionalism at Africa’s premier football competition.
