Rivers Police detain officers over alleged extortion of motorists caught on viral video
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested and detained several police officers accused of extorting motorists after a video of the alleged misconduct surfaced on social media, sparking public outrage and prompting swift action by the authorities.
The officers, attached to the Old GRA Police Station in Port Harcourt, were allegedly captured in a viral video demanding money from motorists, particularly drivers of vehicles with tinted windows, despite some of them reportedly possessing valid permits.
The incident, which gained widespread attention on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, triggered an immediate response from the leadership of the Rivers State Police Command.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Kaborlo, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, the command confirmed the arrest and detention of ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers identified in the allegations.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police ordered the officers’ immediate arrest and detention pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation into the allegations of extortion and other forms of misconduct.
The command said the action underscores its commitment to maintaining discipline within the force and ensuring that officers adhere to the highest standards of professionalism while carrying out their duties.

CP Adepoju strongly condemned the alleged conduct, stressing that extortion, unlawful collection of money, and other unethical practices have no place in the Nigeria Police Force.
“Extortion, illegal collection of money and any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the commissioner stated.
He assured members of the public that the investigation would be conducted in a fair, transparent, and impartial manner, adding that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the provisions of the law and the Nigeria Police Act.
The police chief further reiterated the command’s resolve to restore public confidence in law enforcement by holding officers accountable for misconduct and ensuring that those who abuse their positions are sanctioned.
The Rivers State Police Command also encouraged residents and road users to continue reporting cases of corruption, abuse of office, harassment, and other forms of professional misconduct through official complaint and monitoring channels.
According to the command, public cooperation remains crucial in efforts to promote accountability, improve service delivery, and strengthen trust between the police and the communities they serve.
The latest development comes amid renewed calls for greater transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies, as authorities seek to curb corruption and improve the image of the police force across the country.
