Buhari appoints New Inspector-General of Police
President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a new Inspector General of Police to succeed IGP Ibrahim Idris who is due for retirement beginning from January 15, 2019.
Meanwhile, the President on Monday held extensive meeting at the State House, Abuja, to consider the successor to the retiring IG Idris. Considerations at the meeting provided clue that Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Abubakar Adamu Mohammed, may be appointed the new Inspector General of Police. The official announcement is expected to be made by the President on Tuesday in Abuja.
The retiring Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, had a meeting with the President at the State House on Monday afternoon which lasted into the evening on his disengagement.
The new IG appointed on Monday night, AIG Mohammed, from Nasarawa State, is known within the Police arena as Adamu Mohammed Lafia, in reference to his place of birth, which is the Nasarawa State capital.
Mohammed was born on November 9, 1961. He enlisted in the Police in 1986. He has a Bachelor degree in Geography.
He was at one time a Director of Peacekeeping Operations. He was a former Police Commissioner in Enugu and was an AIG in charge of Zone 5.
He is currently a Directing Staff member at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPPS, Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State.
His elevation might see several deputy inspectors-general retired from service, an exercise that would be reminiscent of how Buhari sacked DIGs when he named Idris as IG in June 2016.
Mohammed spent years of his career with Interpol, the international law enforcement outfit that has Nigeria as a prominent member. He was at the headquarters of the agency in Lyon, France, for several years.
Sources familiar with his career described him as a “diligent and unruffled” Police Officer.
