The Kwara Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) has began a seven-day sensitisation and enlightening programme to educate students on dangers of sexual abuse snd child labour.
This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Babawale Afolabi, spokesperson of the command, on Wednesday in Ilorin.
It stated that the programme was to educate students on the dangers of sexual abuse, child labour and how to prevent themselves from being victims of circumstance.
The spokesman said that the weeklong event, tagged “Addressing the Social Ills of Sexual Abuse and Child Labour Amongst Students”, was organised by the Anti-Human Trafficking and Illegal Migration Unit of the corps.
“The State Commandant, Makinde Ayinla, has directed the Unit to go ahead with the programme.
“The officers and men of the unit, led by their Head Of Unit, ACC. Bamigboye Folake, visited some schools in Ilorin metropolis, where pupils were properly enlightened and educated.
“The students were educated on how to prevent ruining their career and future, by avoiding any illicit sexual activities and if sexually abused, they should report to the appropriate authorities,” he said.
Babawale said that some of the schools visited by the campaign team were Agbabiaka Secondary School, Okelele Secondary School, Government Day Secondary School Kulende, and Oke Sunna Girls Secondary School.
He said that the programme was supported by the Kwara Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, and would continue as there were more schools to be visited.
“It is going to be a continuous programme, as there are plans to visit all the 16 local government areas in the state, especially primary schools, as pupils suffer child abuse the most,” he said.
