Computer dealers canvass blockade of imported fake devices
Sellers of computer accessories at the Lagos State Computer Village, Ikeja, have tasked the Federal Government agencies manning the nation’s entry points to tighten security against the influx of fake materials.
The sellers, under the aegis of the Computer Accessory Dealers Association, made the appeal at the ongoing 2015 Computer Expo.
They said that it was bad to allow importers of fake items scale through the nation’s entry points, which were under the watch of the government’s agencies.
The spokesman of the group, Kelvin Ukaegbu, blamed organisations like the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) for the laxity.
“SON has automated laboratories where these items from abroad can be tested, before they are allowed into the Nigeria market.
“It amazes me to see operatives combing the market for fake items which they should have halted at the land borders, Sea Ports and Air Ports,’’ Ukaegbu said.
He said that items like empty memory cards and unusable USB flashes could be easily detected if the operatives were alert to their duties.
He, however, noted that as a group, the association had set up a Task Force to help blacklist members involved in the illicit acts.
According to him, the image of the association is at stake if unscrupulous dealers are allowed to continue with their inglorious business practices.
The Expo organised by the computer accessory sellers, in conjunction with the Organised Civil Public, was to showcase latest available devices to enable buyers make informed choices.
The event which began on Dec. 9, end on Dec. 12.
