Nigeria can be auto manufacturing hub – FAW
FOREMOST auto manufacturing giant, FAW, has reiterated its interest to invest in the Nigeria auto sector, because according to its Managing Director, Mr. Wang ZhiJian, “Nigeria is the most popularised country in Africa, with the currently highest GDP, thus we believe that there is no reason why Nigeria can’t be next auto major automotive manufacturing centre”.
The MD, who spoke recently at the ceremonial opening of the FAW Semi Knock Down plant in Lagos, stated that “last year we launched our new FAW assembly plant in South Africa, which is one of our biggest automotive investments in Africa. Consequently, we launched Kenya and now Nigeria”.
FAW, the First Automotive Works, broke ground for its first factory on July 15, 1953, producing China’s first commercial truck in 1956 and first sedans in 1958. FAW employs in excess of 120,000 people around the world and sells products in over 70 countries.
Acting Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Li Yong, in his remarks, stated that FAW is a well-established Chinese auto brand with international reckoning, which will compete favourably in the Nigerian market.
The Director of Policy and Planning, National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Mr. LuqmanMamudu, expressed the delight of the federal government over the opening of the FAW assembly line in Lagos, as according to him, it will create more jobs.
Mamudu added that the development of the local auto industry will contribute its quota in the government’s quest to diversify the country’s economy, even as he said the auto policy is being implemented in phases.
