Lawmakers undermine restraining court order, Impeach Deputy Governor Mahdi Gusau
Members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly on Wednesday impeached Deputy Governor Mahdi Gusau.
The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nasiru Mua’zu, receiving the report of the committee appointed by the Chief Judge of Zamfara State, Justice Kulu Aliyu, to investigate the allegations against the deputy governor, led by Retired Justice Halidu Soba, led the House to proceed on the impeachment of deputy governor at plenary on Wednesday.
A member of the seven-man panel, Oladipo Okpeseyi SAN, informed the Speaker and the lawmakers that the committee performed its assignment with the utmost integrity. “The panel is not empowered by the Nigerian Constitution to speak about its report or make it available to any person,” he said.
Meanwhile, the committee hurriedly rounded up activities in less than one week. The deputy governor declined appearance before the committee for interrogation, saying he had no confidence in the committee members.
Counsel to the deputy governor had referred the state lawmakers to a subsisting court order retraining the House from impeaching the deputy governor. The lawmakers undermined the restraining court order and proceeded with the impeachment.
