Tension as Police invite NURTW President, Baruwa
There appears to be rising tension as the Nigeria Police Force invited the National President of National Union Road Transport Workers (NURTW ), Prof. Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, for questioning.
National Daily Newspaper gathered that the Police invitation was not unconnected with dispute between the NURTW leadership and some members, which made the Police deploy some officers to guard the NURTW Secretariat in Abuja.
The President of National Union Road Transport Workers (NURTW ), Prof. Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, has however, waved in to douse the tension, urging union members to remain calm and law abiding. He appealed to members to resist the temptation of violence and chaos that could lead to disturbance of public peace in their respective jurisdiction.
Baruwa, in a media interaction in Abuja, urged NURTW members at the state levels to go about their normal businesses without any molestation but be law abiding. He assured that the union is working toward resolving the internal wranglings.
The NURTW National President insisted that members should not allow anything to truncate and jeopardize its track record and successes of being peaceful over the years.
Commending the Nigerian Labour Congress ( NLC ) led by Comrade Joe Ajaero for quick intervention in the dispute, the NURTW National President declared: “We want to use this medium to express our appreciation to the Nigerian Labour Congress ( NLC ), our members at the state councils and branches for their support and intervention on the issue.
“We are calling on our members across the states to be calm, peaceful and law abiding in their daily activities. We want to assure you that the matter is being addressed and it will soon be resolved.”
The FCT Police Command had on Friday August 11, 2023 invited Baruwa and former Lagos State NURTW chairman, Tajudeen Agbede, for questioning over planned protest at the union’s National Secretariat in Garki 2, Abuja, by some members. They were detained briefly, but the NURTW National President disclosed that he had been released and was no longer in police custody.
