Over 20 dead after cargo boat explosion in Bayelsa

A tragic incident in Bayelsa State has claimed the lives of over 20 people after a wooden cargo boat, identified as ‘Godbless Dickson,’ exploded and caught fire.

The incident occurred on Wednesday along the Ezetu 1 community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

The boat, carrying over 64 passengers and crew members, was reportedly laden with cargo, including farm produce from a rural settlement. It was en route to the Swali market in Yenagoa when the explosion occurred.

State Police Spokesman, ASP Musa Mohammed, confirmed that more than 20 people have been confirmed dead, and rescue efforts by the Marine Police Unit are ongoing.

The Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Bayelsa Chapter, Mr. Ogoniba Ipigansi, also confirmed the incident on Thursday.

He stated that a rescue team consisting of two-speed boats had been dispatched to the scene to assist in the rescue efforts. However, the exact number of casualties remains uncertain as many passengers are still unaccounted for.

The Chairman of Southern Ijaw LGA, Target Segibo, expressed deep regret over the loss of lives, describing the disaster as a significant tragedy.

He called for enhanced safety regulations in the marine transport sector to prevent future occurrences.
