Arewa Youth alleges politicians exploiting Niger crisis to undermine Tinubu’s administration

The Arewa Youth Federation (AYF) has accused unnamed Nigerian politicians of leveraging the ongoing political crisis in Niger Republic to destabilize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and sow division within the country.

This claim was made in a statement by AYF President, Adamu Kabir Matazu, who warned of deliberate disinformation campaigns and ethnic manipulations aimed at Northern Nigeria.

The political turmoil in Niger began in July 2023 when a military junta, led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, overthrew the democratically elected government.

The coup strained relations between Niger and Nigeria, particularly as ECOWAS, chaired by President Tinubu, took a firm stance against the junta.

In a recent development, General Tchiani alleged that Nigeria was hosting French military bases to destabilize Niger—a claim the AYF dismissed as baseless propaganda.

Matazu argued that such statements were part of a calculated attempt by the junta to manipulate public opinion and rally support from Nigeriens and Nigerians alike.

Matazu claimed that certain politicians, particularly those aggrieved by the outcomes of Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, were exploiting the Niger crisis to advance their own agendas.

“Our investigations reveal a disturbing trend of hybrid information warfare orchestrated by these politicians,” he stated.

According to Matazu, these individuals are using disinformation, particularly in Hausa-language media, to incite ethnic sentiments and turn northern voters against the Tinubu-led government. “General Tchiani’s use of Hausa in his interview was not coincidental—it was a calculated move to galvanize opposition and deepen ethnic divides in Nigeria,” Matazu noted.

Political analysts have weighed in on the AYF’s allegations, emphasizing the potential consequences of leveraging external crises for domestic political gains.

Dr. Bawa Ahmed, a political scientist at Ahmadu Bello University, remarked, “If true, such tactics are highly dangerous. They not only undermine the sitting government but also risk destabilizing the nation, particularly in a fragile geopolitical context like West Africa.”

Security expert Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Musa (Rtd.) added, “The claims underscore the need for heightened intelligence efforts. Exploiting regional instability to achieve political goals is a recipe for disaster, especially in a nation as diverse as Nigeria.”

The AYF urged Nigerians to resist divisive narratives and uphold national unity. Matazu called for vigilance, particularly in the face of fake news and propaganda that could inflame tensions.

“These unpatriotic politicians seek to derail President Tinubu’s efforts to deliver the dividends of democracy. Nigerians must reject these tactics and focus on building a stable, united country,” Matazu said.

Analysts believe the allegations highlight the challenges President Tinubu faces in consolidating his administration while navigating regional and domestic political complexities.

With ECOWAS under his leadership, Tinubu’s handling of the Niger crisis could significantly impact his administration’s credibility both at home and abroad.

Matazu concluded with a warning that the manipulation of ethnic sentiments poses a threat not only to Nigeria’s unity but also to the broader stability of the West African region.

The AYF reiterated its support for President Tinubu’s administration and its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and democracy.
