NCC’s Maida outlines vision for telecom sector amid industry challenges
In commemoration of his first 100 days in office, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), engaged with two critical segments of the telecom industry—telecommunication CEOs and the media.
During these meetings, Dr. Maida unveiled his Strategic Vision for the Industry, aligning with the Honorable Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani’s Strategic Blueprint and Five Pillars.
Dr. Maida’s vision is driven by five key areas:
Digitalization of the NCC: Aiming to enhance efficiency and reduce turnaround time in regulatory services.
Focus on Stakeholders: Ensuring the needs of consumers, licensees, and the government are met, with an emphasis on delivering a superior Quality of Experience for telecom consumers—from network selection to customer support.
Strengthening the Industry: Plans include bolstering broadband infrastructure, improving license performance, resolving industry debts, and enhancing the ease of doing business.
Corporate Governance and Advocacy: Dr. Maida emphasized the importance of an improved Corporate Governance Framework. He is also advocating for the waiving of Right of Way fees, designating Telecom Infrastructure as Critical National Infrastructure, and eliminating multiple taxation.
Supporting Digital Growth: The ultimate goal is to ensure the telecommunications industry thrives, with the NCC playing a vital role in the government’s Digital Public Infrastructure initiatives.
Dr. Maida expressed that the telecommunications industry is transitioning from a development phase to a maturity phase, where compliance and growth will be the primary focus.
