1 Killed, 3 injured as wedding turns violent in Bauchi, police arrest nine suspects

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested nine suspects following a violent clash at a wedding ceremony in Gara Village, Ningi Local Government Area, which claimed the life of a 19-year-old man and left three others injured.

Police said the incident occurred during a wedding celebration hosted by a 25-year-old resident of the community when a disagreement among some youths escalated into a physical confrontation.

According to the command, four people sustained injuries during the clash and were rushed to a private hospital in Kada for treatment. Three of the victims were treated and discharged, while one of them, identified as 19-year-old Abubakar Usamatu of Tashan Marke Hamlet, was later referred to the General Hospital in Ningi due to the severity of his injuries.

He was subsequently confirmed dead by medical personnel.

Following a report at the Burra Divisional Police Headquarters, detectives launched an investigation that led to the arrest of nine suspects believed to have participated in the fatal fight. The suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

In a related development, the police also confirmed another fatal incident in Kirfi Local Government Area, where a naming ceremony turned violent after a clash between rival youth groups from Tudun Sullubawa and Dosi hamlets.

The confrontation resulted in the death of 27-year-old Sani Abacha Alhaji Jabbi, who reportedly sustained fatal machete injuries during the attack.

The police said three teenage suspects, aged 16, 17 and 18, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The Bauchi State Police Command disclosed that both cases have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the incidents, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the rising trend of violence at social gatherings, warning that individuals who resort to violence during public events would face the full weight of the law.

He urged parents, community leaders and youth groups to promote peaceful conflict resolution and discourage acts capable of disrupting public peace.

The command also announced that security patrols have been intensified across rural communities and event centres to prevent similar incidents, warning that organisers of public gatherings have a responsibility to ensure adequate security and maintain order throughout their events.
